Sprayâcoated Hard Carbon Composite Anodes for SodiumâIon Insertion
Sodium-ion batteries are among the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. Hard carbon (HC) electrodes have been recognized as suitable active anode material for mono-valent ion batteries. Here, we present a simple and cost-effective spray-coating process to prepare HC composite electrodes on copper current collectors with different binder (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) content and different HC particle sizes. The spray-coated electrodes were evaluated and tested in 1â
M sodium perchlorate (NaClO) in propylene carbonate (PC) in dependence of the CMC content with and without fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as additive, and the performance was also compared to doctor bladed HC electrodes. Spray-coated anodes in Na half-cells revealed improved capacity during the first cycles compared with doctor bladed anodes with similar thicknesses. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) studies were performed, which revealed a significant increase of inorganic fluoro-compounds in the formed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) when FEC was present as additive. In addition, first single electrode microcalorimetry studies on spray-coated thin HC composite electrodes yielded an entropy of the sodiation process of 80â
JâmolâK at high state of charge (SoC), comparable to that of bulk Na deposition
Integrating UML/OCL Derived Properties into Validation and Verification Processes
Abstract. UML and OCL are rich languages offering a multitude of modeling elements. They provide modelers with simple and effective tools to express and visualize models, but their complex semantics are a great challenge for validation and verification processes, which are often limited by their underlying logic. On the basis of a network topology example model, describing lower physical and logical network levels, we demonstrate applications of derived attributes and associations that help checking network security aspects. This includes finding inconsistencies in an existing network, directing to potential configuration errors and property evaluation, e.g. reachability between components within the network. In addition, a transformation of derived properties into relational logic is presented to enable the use of a modern instance finder for further verification tasks and generation of valid networks configurations
An in-flight plasma diagnostic package for spacecraft with electric propulsion
The plasma diagnostics presented in this article target the plasma surrounding a spacecraft that is created by the electric thruster and its surface modifying effects. The diagnostic package includes a retarding potential analyzer, a plane Langmuir probe, and an erosion sensor. The paper describes the instrument as well as suitable test environments for mimicking the effects expected in space and shows test results. The system is to fly for the first time on the Heinrich Hertz satellite, which is scheduled to be launched in 2023. The spacecraft will be equipped with a pair of Highly Efficient Multistage Plasma Thrusters (HEMPT) and a pair of Hall thrusters for redundancy
The Astropy Problem
The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, "a community
effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster
interoperability between Python astronomy packages." For five years this
project has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots,
self-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by
the majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has
always been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors
receive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now
critical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible
solutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the
sustainability of general purpose astronomical software
